Swissted

Swissted Posters by Mike Joyce

Wow, just look at this. Old punk gig posters redone with a swath of Swiss modernism. By New York designer Mike Joyce. Geez, will you just look at that Fugazi one, or the Clash, or Descendents… I could drool for days looking at this stuff.

Under the Influence

Under the Influence

One of my favourite radio shows to listen to has been The Age of Persuasion by Terry O’Reilly. It has always inspired me to think about the story behind the marketing and the story behind the brands of our age. Host O’Reilly presents his analysis in an entertaining and engaging show that always leaves me fascinated. It reminds me how important it is to understand marketing, and just how much there is to learn about the subject. Terry’s new show Under the Influence is into its debut season. It picks up where the Age of Persuasion left off. Whether live on CBC Radio 1 or downloaded as a podcast, it’s a remarkable listen.

Good Design

I picked up this little gem in Tokyo.

Good design will bring you happiness... bad design will come back to bite you in the ass.

V2 RAD Reunion Posters Printed and for Sale

Well, here it is! Version 2 of my RAD 25th Anniversary Reunion posters. Who wouldn’t want a Tuff Wheel hanging from their wall? I’ve upped the quantities on these ones to a run of 60. Same goodness as the first ones I printed, which I’ve now dubbed the OG. (of course) Printed Pantone Yellow and Pantone Violet on 100# Cougar. I would like to think that those are the colours of the LA Kings jerseys of old (which also happens to be the only hockey jersey I own.) Available in the store for $25 plus shipping. Want the lowdown? Check the post regarding the first version I had printed.

RAD Reunion Posters Printed and for Sale

I have always wanted to make my own screen printed, limited run poster. I’ve admired work from people like Dan Stiles, Frank Kozik and Art Chantry along with shows like Flatstock at Bumbershoot. My dilemma has always been coming up with the right idea at the right time for something that I’m interested in. Out came the call for poster submissions for the 25th anniversary reunion for the movie RAD. The process was fairly simple: come up with a cool design and have it sold at the opening night of the reunion at the BMX Gallery in Calgary. I came up with two designs, both of which I was equally happy with, but torn as to which one I should print. After soliciting the opinion of a few friends, the consensus was with this design. (Although I’m still very much contemplating printing my second design.) This design was the first concept that popped into my head; the iconic Haro number plate overprinted by an old school image. There were a few stipulations: The poster needed to include the title sponsors, the logo, BMX and the Helltrack logo. There are not a lot of resources online to find a good Helltrack logo, or even a RAD logo, so all of that had to be redrawn, but it also had to have that hand drawn look from the movie.

Truth be told, I never liked the movie RAD. With the exception of the intro and the credits, it was best forgotten. That’s why I never went with an image of Cru, instead I retreated to a stack of old magazines and ‘zines to find the right image. I would like to think it’s Timmy Judge from an old BMX Action magazine (there was no photo credit), so it’s hard to say. Printed by the good squeegee pullers at Monolith Press in Nor-Cal.

If you would like to purchase one of these, you can go to the store. They are $25 plus shipping, or $30 plus shipping off eBay. This has been such a blast that I just might get that second design printed soon…
